Just like the slightly longer pacchero, the shape of the mezzo pacchero is known for keeping the pasta firm and consistent, characteristic to the bronze drawn Gragnano pasta. Mezzi Paccheri are especially suited for very thick sauces, where you really want the pasta and the sauce to mingle, like for example in your Pasta Fagioli or Pasta ai Piselli.
